I first encountered To The Strongest in Edinburgh, visiting my good friend Mr Hodge for a game of I Ain’t Been Shot, Mum. We passed a table full of figures with chaps having a jolly good time, and Derek mentioned the rules and how they gave a great game.
I thought nothing of it, but then found out that my regular IABSM opponents down south played a lot of TTS, even entering the big annual competition. I asked if someone would show me how they worked, friend Bevan stepped forward, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I now play TTS on a regular basis, up-sizing my old Vis Bellica armies to suit, and even basing my new (at time of writing!) Classicial Indians on element bases specifically for the game. Over the first (long), lockdown, I introduced Daughter #1’s boyfriend to the game, and had a weekly session where we’d regularly get two or three battles in. I’ve even actually played TTS against Daughter #2, with her favourite commander “The Beardless King” in charge, and am so far zero for two down! I’ve even invested in a large ECW collection to play the ECW variant For King & Parliament, my first venture into pike and shot but that, as they also say, is another story.
